MSM Homes Services is certified by the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) and licensed as a Radon Measurement Professional by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH). MSM Home Services uses continuous radon monitors (CRMs) to conduct 48-hour tests for real-estate transactions, follow-up tests after installation of mitigation systems, and long-term tests to analyze seasonal changes in radon concentrations.
Radon gas is a known human carcinogen and prolonged exposure to elevated radioactive-gas concentrations causes an increased risk of lung cancer. The U.S. Surgeon General warns that radon is the leading cause of lung-cancer deaths among non-smokers. Not everyone who breathes radon decay products will develop lung cancer, but risk increases when an individual is exposed to high concentrations for long durations. Because people spend much of their time at home, it is likely to be where the most significant radon exposure occurs. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), one out of every 15 homes in the U.S. is estimated to have radon concentrations that exceed the national remediation level.
Radon gas is colorless, odorless and tasteless. It comes from the breakdown, or radioactive decay, of uranium that is found in rock and soil all around the world. Radon enters a building through cracks and joints in the foundation, where decay products eventually become trapped in a person's lungs when they inhale. The radiation emitted from these particles is what can damage lung tissue and lead to cancer. The only way to know whether elevated concentrations of radon are present in any building is to test.
The radon concentration in the air within a building should be below 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L), the nationally established action level for radon gas mitigation. Many factors determine why some buildings have elevated levels of radon while others do not: the gas concentrations in local soil; the permeability of soil and underlying geology; the structure or construction methods of a building; and the type, design, or operation of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system. MSM Home Services testing can determine the radon concentration in any home and a fully-illustrated, digital report is provided to the client within twenty-four (24) hours of the equipment retrieval.
